Possibly it’s because we have so much coastline here in New Zealand – over 15,000 kilometres in fact – so a lot of life is lived around the coast. For some, this means life revolves around boats and sailing. For me, I’ve been sailing only once, not in New Zealand but in Vancouver. When I first started working at Te Ara my colleagues who sat nearest to me were often bemused by the squeals of delight that erupted from me every now and then. The cause was almost always that I had opened an image to prepare for our Bush theme, and it was cute. Probably it was a baby chick of some kind.

I returned from my Christmas holidays heartbroken.
